About Dave Shepherd

Dave Shepherd is a magician whose specialty is close-up illusion, a style of performance he calls "the purest form of theater." Dave has been a performing artist for over thirty years, and since 1996 has performed magic professionally in and around Washington, DC, and in the mid-Atlantic region. His close-up magic has also been seen throughout the United States and in Germany. He was selected by the readers of Washington Families Magazine as the Best Bar/Bat Mitzvah Entertainer in the Washington, DC area for 2004.

Dave is also a musician, an actor, a writer and a teacher. Dave's performing career began in the theatre. He has appeared in leading roles in such regional theatres as Actors Theatre of Louisville, Arena Stage in Washington, Playmakers Repertory Company, and California Actors Theatre, as well as in New York at the Chelsea Westside Theatre. He was seen in several network daytime dramas and in the feature film Marie with Sissy Spacek.

During the 1980s Dave worked as a musician in Nashville. He performed live and in recordings with the Features, the Taylor and Stone Band, Cadillac Jack, and Chili Shack.

In addition to being a professional performer, Dave has a Ph.D. in German from Vanderbilt University. He is a teacher of German, linguistics, and theatre. Dave has published two books and several articles on German political literature. He has worked as a feature writer for the professional magicians' journal The Magic Menu.

For over five years, Dave was well known in the Washington area as the house magician at Mama's Italian Restaurant, Fairfax, Virginia.
